Position Summary:

The Director of Student Services is an advocate for students, working to create and promote school programs that not only ensure that students are welcomed, supported, and encouraged, but also that the academic program and related experiences are reflective of the students, their interests and current/future needs. The Director takes on the responsibility to develop and supervise services that facilitate both academic achievement and personal-social wellbeing and growth. Supervising school counselors and social workers,, the Director ensures that services are compliant with school, network, and district mandates and supportive of the school community. The Director of Student Services is responsible to align the student services program with network and school goals, to collect and report data on the student experience, to advise the administration on programming and scheduling, and to manage and coach the performance of the assigned teams.

This is a 10.5 month position.


Key Competencies/Duties:

Supervise professional staff.

  • Ensure staff fulfillment of professional responsibilities and purposeful use of time.
  • Lead team meetings and attend relevant school, district, and professional meetings as needed or required.
  • Observe staff engaged in professional practice regularly.
  • Provide follow-up consultation, coaching, and training as required to promote a continual cycle of improvement.
  • Document observations and feedback as required by the school or network.
  • Assist team in preparing for evaluation, as requested.
  • Facilitate professional learning communities (i.e. counseling team, social work team, etc.).
  • Lead the development of annual programming for all assigned teams.
  • Review all annual goals of the team and revise as needed.
  • Provide professional development workshops and other training throughout the year.
  • Ensure strong compliance with external mandates.
  • Provide insight into staff disciplinary matters.
  • Assign caseloads. Manage a caseload.
  • Reports concerns regarding staff performance or conduct to the administration, in a timely manner.

Contribute to the effective administration of the school and assigned teams.

  • Support the school counseling team with ASCA implementation.
  • Serve on the leadership and MTSS teams.
  • Collect, review, and analyze data for the purpose of advising the administration and team on how to shift practices to support increased student satisfaction and success.
  • Train team on course registration procedures and protocols.
  • Assist the administration in developing, revising, and interpreting school policies that affect the student experience, promotion, or post-secondary plans and outcomes.
  • Communicate the academic and support services program to parents and the community (i.e. open house, back to school events, newsletters, etc.) and help parents understand how to access available services.
  • Write annual goal(s) for team(s) to be reviewed at the end of the year.
  • Submit reports as requested by the administration.

Lead improvements in service delivery.

  • Strengthen alignment of the annual student services program with school, network, and district or state goals and mandates.
  • Ensure that annual planning promotes improvement in post-secondary outcomes for students.
  • Promote proven strategies that are efficient and effective for service delivery.
  • Lead implementation of sound, research-based assessment practices.
  • Assist and supervise staff in managing daily challenges of service delivery and serve as a resource staff.
  • Routinely meet with other directors to promote interdisciplinary programming.
  • Implement program evaluation.

Promote the development of supportive, welcoming communities for students.

  • Assist the administration with the planning of orientation programs and beginning-of-year initiatives that create/strengthen positive connections between the school, staff, and students.
  • Guide staff on ways to build classroom communities that generate student engagement, collaboration, and achievement.
  • Support staff to develop effective relationship and community building strategies.

Encourage a continual cycle of improvement for the team.

  • Seek and apply purposeful professional development opportunities to sharpen and modernize practices.
  • Provide professional development to the team throughout the school year.
  • Suggest external professional development opportunities to teachers, related to areas of need.
  • Help the team stay current with respect to developments, innovations, and trends as such relate to team programs and concerns.
  • Implement effective communication procedures to ensure that the team is well-informed on events or developments related to the school.

Manage the team's budget effectively.

  • Assume responsibility for ordering and ensuring distribution of team materials and equipment.
  • Maintain an accurate record inventory of all team materials purchased by the school and file an inventory with the administration annually (when requested).
  • Prepare an annual budget for the assigned team(s) that reflects the team's needs and priorities.
  • Monitor all expenditures associated with the assigned team(s).

Attend to and fulfill professional responsibilities as defined by the network, district, and state.

  • Lead with integrity and professionalism at all times, even in the face of conflict or ambiguity.
  • Act to reflect a service orientation, grounded in compassion and partnership, reflecting the mission and vision of the school and elevating the school's image in the community.
  • Ensure that compliance obligations are fulfilled accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Attend, participate in, and lead meetings.
  • Communicate professionally, attending to the tone of verbal and electronic communications, as well as the formatting, grammar, syntax and other elements that support clear messaging and elevate the perception of the school.
  • Take on projects and initiatives as requested by the administration.
  • Attend summer training sessions, as needed.
  • Readily reflect on practices and shift them to meet expectations or needs.
  • Acts as an ambassador, elevating the school's image and encouraging families to select and partner with the school.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reflect, support, and promote the mission and vision of the school as well as the principles of D.E.I.

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Support the creation of inclusive, identity-affirming spaces for students.
  • Implement professional practice and responsibilities, demonstrating cultural competence.
  • Implement D.E.I principles in interactions with members of the school community.

Qualifying Education/Licensure:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • Master's Degree (Required) in School Counseling or Social Work (A Plus!)
  • A minimum of 5 years of successful work experience in a school or similar setting (Required)
  • At least 1 year of experience mentoring, coaching, or leading professional development for professional staff (Strongly Preferred)
  • Bilingual Spanish/English; Arabic/English; Urdu/English (A Plus!)

Other Qualifications:

  • Substantial experience with PowerSchool or other student databases (Strongly Preferred)
  • Experience supervising employees (Required)
  • Experience in urban setting (Strongly Preferred)
  • Strong technical skills - ability to work with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, presentation platforms and equipment, and student information databases, integrating these platforms when necessary (Required)
