Position Summary:

The Civitas principal provides outstanding, purposeful, and effective leadership, management, and supervision that promote learning for each student and staff member. They lead others and stand for the ideas, values, and experiences that produce the next generation's agents of change. They are stewards for learning - student learning, staff learning, and parent learning. They provide a clear vision, inspiration, energy and insight for all stakeholders in an enlightening and high functioning school community. They are focused on nurturing global citizens for an active role in a democratic society. Civitas principals lead data driven decision-making, change management, accountability, conflict resolution, team building, and a well-organized school. They have a set of beliefs and a skill set that guides the school in day-to-day operations to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all students, staff, and families. The principals orchestrate a complex, dynamic, and collaborative learning community each and every day where students and student learning and wellbeing are always the central focus.

  • Directs the work of assistant principals to meet school needs and achieve goals.
  • Delegates duties, responsibilities, and assignments appropriately and effectively.
  • Builds capacity of the assistant principals, instructional coaches, team leads, and other members of the school leadership team to lead change and take charge of critical initiatives.
  • Implements performance plan protocols for leadership team members.
  • Ensures effective scheduling of students and teachers.
  • Reviews and revises assessment practices, discipline protocols and other school policies.
  • Manages staff and school actions in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Demonstrates an ability to utilize technology effectively to create and manage systems and fulfill professional obligations efficiently.

Supports the continual improvement of teaching, counseling, and other professional practices.

  • Creates and sustains a culture of high expectations and drive for excellence.
  • Engages staff in a shared vision for effective teaching, learning, support services, and school experiences by promoting the use of research-based practices, the construction and implementation of a rigorous academic program, the revision of disciplinary processes, and the development of high expectations.
  • Ensures that curricula are tightly aligned with student needs and school goals.
  • Reviews instructional and assessment practices, making changes to practices and policies in order to support student growth, achievement, and post-secondary access and success.
  • Implements data driven practices.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of professional practices and develops measures to improve performance.
  • Develops and implements a professional learning plan for staff.
  • Promotes use of technology to enhance student access to the curriculum and engagement.
  • Ensures that instructional coaching is purposeful, strategic, and effective.
  • Hires and retains staff who demonstrate the ability to maximize student learning, promote substantial growth and achievement, and demonstrate compassion and accountability.

Builds and maintains collaborative relationships.

  • Creates and sustains relationships, practices, and programs that result in active student, family, and staff engagement in the school community and in school improvement.
  • Builds school teams to address and resolve school concerns.
  • Strengthens collaboration within the school, with other schools, and with local, regional, national and international agencies and communities.

Improves school culture and climate in order to create a safe and welcoming environment for all stakeholders.

  • Leads with integrity and professionalism at all times, treating people with dignity and respect.

  • Develops and maintains a teacher/staff leadership program that deepens staff commitment and dedication to the school community.
  • Ensures the development, maintenance, and promotion of a vibrant, active student-centered culture to cultivate student leadership and engage students in non-traditional learning and roles.
  • Develops and maintains a school culture that creates or sustains traditions, rites of passage, "ways of doing," campus beliefs, etc. that engage students, shape community interactions in a positive manner, and deeply integrate and connect students, families, and staff to the school community.
  • Augments and shapes community engagement to elevate school presence and positive impact on the surrounding community.

Attends to and fulfills professional responsibilities as defined by the network, district, and state.

  • Ensures the effective and efficient supervision and management of the school staff.
  • Manages school budget effectively, overseeing purchasing processes to make sure that school funds are used purposefully, in keeping with regulations, and documented clearly and consistently.
  • Conducts weekly leadership team meetings with a clear, strategic agenda reflective of the needs of the school, upcoming obligations, and current initiatives, etc.
  • Communicates clearly, accurately, strategically, and regularly with staff, students, and families.
  • Ensures that performance evaluations are completed in a timely manner, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement in effect.
  • Supervises the handling of disciplinary matters.
  • Ensures that compliance obligations are fulfilled accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Conducts parents meetings and workshops throughout the school year.
  • Manages the collective bargaining agreement and obligations contained therein effectively, consistently, and accurately. Trains leadership team on contract management.
  • Attends and participates positively and productively in network leadership meetings.
  • Seeks professional development opportunities to sharpen practices.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Reflects, supports, and promotes the mission and vision of the school as well as the principles of D.E.I.

  • Demonstrates preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Supports the creation of inclusive, identity-affirming spaces for students.
  • Implements professional practice and responsibilities, demonstrating cultural competence.
  • Implements D.E.I principles in interactions with members of the school community.

Qualifying Education/Licensure:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • Master's Degree (Required)
  • Illinois State Board of Education Professional Educators License (PEL) (K-8; 6-12; 9-12 - Required) or current, comparable out-of-state licensure (Required)
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of successful teaching experience in a elementary or secondary school (Required)
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of successful administrative or school leadership experience in an elementary or secondary school as a Principal, Assistant Principal, or related role involving the supervision and evaluation of employees (Required)
  • Bilingual Spanish/English; Arabic/English; Urdu/English (A Plus!)

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising and evaluating staff (Required)
  • Experience in urban school setting (Strongly Preferred)
  • Strong technical skills - ability to work with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, presentation platforms and equipment, and student information databases, integrating these platforms when necessary (Required)
